What Is Poker Slow Roll Meaning According to David Lappin?

What exactly does poker slow roll meaning? David Lappin visits the GO Blog to recall a time when he taught an opponent the meaning of slow rolling and how terrible it can be to be shown a winner after your opponent fooled you into thinking you were ahead.

In my previous blog, I discussed how I shot an angle during the Dutch Masters. To be fair, I was new to the game at the time. I had no idea it was an etiquette violation.

I’m afraid I don’t have such a defense for the story I’m going to tell. The following is a tale of ruthless vengeance. I’d like to remind you one more time to do what I say, not what I did.

What Does Poker Slow Roll Meaning?

Slowrolls are a particularly torturous type of poker game. They are a convenient dramatic approach to show that the hero has gotten one over on the evil, and they are a film-like motif glamorized in cowboy westerns.

They are, however, strongly discouraged around the poker table. They’re a slap in the face to your opponent, a show of arrogance and disrespect that’s unneeded. They’re also rather amusing.

Poker Slow Roll Meaning

The UKIPT Isle of Man festival in 2014 was perhaps the most pleasant stop on the tour. That weekend, I remember feeling particularly peaceful. That was until one of the turbo side events slowed me down. It was something along these lines:

The flop was released. He led out for half the pot with the King of Diamonds, 6 of Hearts, and 3 of Hearts. I dialed the number. The 8 of spades came up on the turn, and he bet half the pot once more.

I recall feeling convinced that he had a strong hand and that he was the type of player who would struggle to fold Aces or AK on the river. I called once more, expecting to get my 7 or heart binked.

The king of hearts, my money card, appeared in the water – or so I thought. I instantly went all-in after he bet half the pot again. His brow furrowed in concentration.

The Conversation on The call

For the call, he shrugged and tossed in a chip. I proudly displayed my flush on the table. With a disappointed expression on his face, he nodded his head, let out a small sigh, returned his gaze to his cards, and tapped them on the table. The ace and queen of hearts were then flipped over.

Needless to say, a prickly exchange ensued.

“Are you f*cking kidding me?”

“What?”

“What are you doing, man? You had the winner. Just turn it over immediately?”

“I’ll play my hand how I want, thank you very much.”

“I’m not talking about how you played your hand. I’m talking about you slowrolling me at the end!”

“What’s a slowroll?” (Laughing)

“Yeah, like you don’t f*cking know!”

He shrugged and continued laughing as he pulled in the pot.

Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold

I was back to a starting stack following my early double-up. I grinded up a stack after a few hours. Our table was broken, so my new ‘buddy’ and I were seated at a different table, this time with me two seats to his left. I had him covered by this point, and as we approached the money bubble, the following hand occurred:

I stared down at two black Kings on the Button as he min-raised from the Hijack. I raised the stakes to 5.5 big blinds by three-betting him. He dialed my number. The flop was the king of hearts, king of diamonds, and 7 of spades, and he led into me for one-third of the pot, much to my astonishment.

I paused for a moment before dialing. The 3 of spades was the next card to be dealt. He slammed into me once more, this time for half a pot. He was down to his last wager, which was about the size of a pot.

The Difficult Option

It was around this time that I had a thought. It was a diabolical, hilarious, filthy disgusting, completely unsporting thought. He most likely mistook my delay for hesitation. He most likely assumed I was faced with a difficult option.

In actuality, I was probing my conscience, pleading with my higher selves to intervene and prevent me from doing what I was impelled to do. If retribution is best served cold, what I had planned came straight from the freezer.

I decided after cutting out chips. The two of hearts appeared on the river, and he shoved right on time. I paused for a moment. My brow wrinkled. With a shake of my head, I expressed my dissatisfaction with the situation. I paused for a second longer.

And… All Knowledge Is Found Out

I finally shrugged and placed a chip in for the call. He patted the table with pocket jacks, and I nodded, groaned, returned my gaze to my cards, and tapped the table again before mucking my hand.

“Wait a minute… you did what???”, I hear you say.

That’s right, I tossed my cards face down into the middle of the table, midway between me and the dealer. What was I thinking when I did this? You see, back then, there was a rule that you couldn’t muck your hand on the river if you called, and I knew this dealer was a stickler for following it.

As predicted, she said, “I’m sorry sir, you have to show.” “I have to?”, I replied meekly, pretending not to know. “I’m afraid so”, she said and she turned over my pocket Kings.

The entire table did a double take! I started laughing.

“Oh my God”, I said, “that’s quads!”

My opponent was stunned, his mind attempting to absorb what had just occurred. He had assumed he had won a chip-lead pot just a fraction of a second before. A cheeky Irishman was now giving him a snarky and blatant send-off.

He rose up from the table, speechless, with a disgusted and angry expression on his face.

“You asked me earlier what slowroll is”, I said.

“That’s a slowroll”.
