Loser Takes All is a short story by Graham Greene. Just like cepen in general, the story in this short story is light enough but not boring.
The conflict that was presented made the readers tense. And one thing for sure, once reading this short story, it will be difficult for you to stop, aka addicted.
Synopsis of Loser Takes All
This short gambling story by Greene tells of a couple who is asked to go to Monte Carlo to meet a man named Dreuther. Bertram, the main character, is asked to meet the man on a cruise ship in the waters of Monte Carlo.
Bertram and his girlfriend had plans for marriage and honeymoon in Monte Carlo. The two then met with Dreuther to take care of their marriage.
Continuing with the story in the short story Loser Takes All, While waiting for this man to arrive on the cruise ship, Bertram and his girlfriend rented a room at a hotel that also provided a casino. Because Dreuther did not arrive, Bertram then extended his rent until the next day.
Bertram then extended the rent again and again until he and his girlfriend were confused because they didn’t have enough money to pay the hotel room rental bill. Bertram then tried to take part in a bet in the game of roulette at the casino in the hotel he lived in. He really hopes that he can win the game and get the money to pay the rent for the hotel room and pay the loan money that he has been using.
The Turning Point of Bertram, the Main Character
Next on Loser Takes All, Bertram then took the initiative to seek fortune by playing roulette. Luckily, he always wins. He now earns a lot of money and can use it to pay for hotel room rent and money loans.
Bertram then met a successful businessman, Mr. Bowles, who turned out to be a shareholder and director of one of the city’s casinos. Mr. Bowles were Dreuther’s main rivals. Seeing Bertram playing roulette very well, this businessman then met Bertram with the aim of wanting to borrow money from him.
Bertram agreed as long as he got a portion of the profits from the casino business run by Mr. Bowles. It turned out that Bertram wanted to get revenge by becoming Dreuther’s main competitor through this collaboration.

On the other hand, as told in Loser takes All, Cary, Bertram’s lover, begins to feel uncomfortable with Bertram, who feels that he has turned into an obsessive person. The romantic character has been lost. Cary also doesn’t really like it when the two of them get rich. Then, Cary falls in love with another man who really loves her. Cary then left Bertram and preferred to go with this man.
Bertram is disappointed and blames Dreuther as the main cause of his bad luck. Dreuther defended himself by saying he didn’t meet Bertram on purpose at that time. Dreuther then offers to help bring Cary back into Bertram’s arms.
Dreuther tells Bertram about the plans to bring Cary back. The plan worked. Bertram was very happy when Cary became his lover again. He no longer thought about his money which now fell into Mr. Bowles.
There is something unique about the main character, Bertram in this short story Loser Takes All. He himself doesn’t believe in luck. However, this short story explains how Bertram got lucky until he won the game of roulette.
Another uniqueness is the deep moral message that Greener wants to convey to his short story readers. From the summary of the story above, we can take a lesson that money or wealth will not be able to buy happiness. This message is what Greene wants to convey through the character Bertram.
Did you know that Loser Takes All also has a film version. A film with a different title, namely Strike It Rich by director Harvey Weinstein was released in 1990. Weinstein hooked Glynis Johns and Rosanno Brazzi as the main characters. There are also other artists who enliven this film, namely Molly Ringwald and Robert Lindsay.
